Roadmaps are a lot like adventures—filled with exciting plans but always open to surprises. While we chart our course with care, new ideas or feedback might steer us in fresh directions.

Fonto Roadmap: 2025 and into the future

At Fonto, our mission is to continuously improve the experience for everyone who works with structured content—whether they’re authors, reviewers, editors, or developers. As we look to the rest of this year and next, our roadmap outlines the exciting features, enhancements, and performance improvements we’re working on, while staying responsive to the needs of our partners and customers.

With four releases each year, we aim to deliver updates that not only streamline workflows for end users but also provide developers with the tools and flexibility they need to create seamless integrations and custom solutions. From significant upgrades to Fonto Editor and Fonto Review to new developer tooling in Fonto Output, we’re excited to share what’s in store for 2025 and beyond.

Fonto Output: Export Word documents with track changes powered by Document History
The 8.14 release will extend Fonto Output with the capability to export Word documents with track changes. These track changes come from Fonto Document History. In later releases, this support will be extended to PDF files and other output formats.

Flexible data annotations
We’re extending the Fonto Review annotations system with capabilities to tag content and annotate that with custom rich data. This will support cases like Smart Standards, XBRL-tagging for financial documents, or requirements in regulatory content.

This will leverage the powerful and flexible Fonto Review data models and underlying system.

Suggestion Mode
One of the most requested features for Fonto Review has been the ability to leave structured suggestions—not just text changes. We’re excited to introduce Suggestion Mode, which will enable users to make changes within a Fonto Editor-like environment. Now, edits involving paragraphs, lists, tables, and other structural elements can be tracked as suggestions, giving teams more flexibility without losing track of who made what changes.

General Availability release of Fonto Output
This release removes the beta label of the Fonto Output product. APIs will be stable. This release is the foundation for the Output product to build the full set of features on.

AI building blocks
Throughout the Fonto customer base we see numerous usecases for AI. Whether it is assisted writing with generative AI or quality checks, search and reuse, Fonto is at the heart of the user experience.

Fonto continues to add building blocks to support these usecases, while still allowing them to be industry specific. Fonto integrates with the AI systems customers have in place.

Closing the AI feedback loop
Generative AI is great at setting up a first draft of a document. Subject matter experts check this content and will refine where needed. These changes are often not fed back to the AI model to retrain.

Fonto aims to close this feedback loop by extracting these changes and allow to classify them and feed back to the original model, making sure the next document generation is not making the same mistakes.

Commenting on change
To improve reviewing experiences, we’re bringing Fonto Review and Fonto Document History closer together. This allows reviewers to focus on the parts that changed, instead of having to review an entire document again.

Comments are tied to the change, so the audit trail will tell users not only what changed but also why it changed.

Reviewing high-fidelity content
Occasional reviewers are not always familiar with structured content. They are often used to reviewing published documents in Word or PDF formats.

To address this, we will bring Fonto Output previews to Fonto Review so users can review marked up content. These comments are automatically tied to the underlying XML, keeping the original audit trail in tact.

Empowering Multi-Lingual Authoring and Localization

Expected Release: June 2025
Fonto Version: 8.13

Our previous release (8.12) enhanced the already powerful Fonto Editor with AI authoring assistance. Customers can now connect their own AI model that authors and template designers can interact with to generate new content, as well as summarize, simplify, or otherwise improve existing content. Additionally, template designers can pre-define AI prompts for components in the template, so authors can start a document with content generated by the AI. The author is in full control of the content generated and can adjust it, as necessary.

With our next release (8.13), we’re enabling multi-lingual content creation. As of this release, authors and reviewers can work together in any language, with strongly improved support for IME (Input Method Editors) and right-to-left (RTL) languages. Our goal is to support the way global teams work together by integrating advanced translation systems, making localization efforts more efficient.

The Fonto One UI you are used to will display the source language components alongside their translations to allow users to easily find every translation available for specific components. Authors can also request new translations and view the status of previously requested translations.

Enhanced Reuse, Smarter Workflows, Deeper Insights, and Enhanced Outputs

Expected Release: 2H 2025 and 2026
Fonto Version: 8.14, 8.15, and beyond

As we move into the second half of 2025 and into the new year, our focus shifts to enhanced support for reuse, deeper integration, and enhanced collaboration:

  • Enhanced Reuse: We are enhancing reuse throughout the system by making it easier to find and reuse components, identify potential reuse during document instantiation, and identify when and how a reused component has changed outside of your document.
  • Alert & Compare: Users will be notified of added content or data updates and will have the ability to compare it with existing content. This ensures transparency and helps teams keep up to date with the latest content additions.
  • Reason for Change: Users will no longer just see what has changed, but why—providing essential context for decisions and creating an easier way of understanding how content has been developing.
  • Capture Rationale for Content: Authors will be able to tag content granularly to link a particular component, paragraph, or sentence back to its associated law, regulation, or guideline.
  • Custom Component Workflows: We will support custom workflows to enable you to tailor the system to align with your organization’s specific component-level authoring and reviewing requirements. This allows for enhanced content lifecycle tracking and streamlined collaboration between authors and reviewers.
  • Tasks and Guidance in Fonto Review: We are bringing the powerful tasks and author guidance features that you already use in Fonto Editor into Fonto Review. These features help template reviewers provide feedback directly within Fonto Review, eliminating the need to switch to Fonto Editor for a smoother, more efficient review process.
  • Red-lined Outputs: To further facilitate external reviews, we’re introducing the ability to generate red-lined documents, offering clear visibility into tracked changes and ensuring smoother collaboration with external stakeholders.
  • SPL, ePI & FHIR Outputs: For those needing specialized formats, we’re rolling out SDK support for output in XML and JSON, including formats like SPL, ePI, and FHIR—making regulatory submissions and integrations even easier.
  • Data Product API: Our new Data Product API will allow teams to extract all content, metadata, comments, and tasks, making it easier to create valuable data insights.
