Fonto Why & How: Custom Fonto Review Navigators

Since the release of Fonto 8.14, we have introduced a few new API’s in Fonto Editor which allow you to create your own navigators for the Fonto Review add-on. Previously, you could only register your own annotation types, and they would all be navigated by the same default Fonto Review navigator. With this blog post we’d like to highlight some of the possibilities these new APIs give you.

Previously, all annotation types configured for the Fonto Review add-on would end up in the same Fonto Review navigator. This means that you couldn’t make a distinction between them in terms of navigation, unless you set up a filter which would let you select only one specific type of annotation. You, as an author, would always have to navigate through all annotations, no matter their annotation type.

Since the release of Fonto 8.14, this is no longer an issue. We have introduced a few API’s which let you register your own navigator and choose which annotation types should be navigated by it. Every navigator also has its own filter component, which allows filters to be tuned to the annotation types they are filtering.

This enables a range of possible use-cases for annotations, since annotations are basically a range within a document with a bit of metadata attached to them. For example, you can configure an annotation type for tracking to-dos in documents and have a dedicated navigator for them.

Check out our guides on setting up a navigator, annotation types, and filters to learn how you can set up your own Fonto Review navigators.
