Fonto 8.13 is here, and it’s a big one. This release introduces the public beta of Fonto Output, a long-awaited addition to the Fonto suite that brings high-quality document generation to your structured content workflows. Alongside this, we’ve delivered meaningful improvements across the board—from usability upgrades in Fonto Editor to better translation and metadata handling in Fonto One.
Fonto Output (Beta)
Say hello to Fonto Output – our brand-new document generation engine, now in public beta! It’s fast, flexible, and already powers production for several of our customers.
- Battle-tested: In production for years, now available for everyone.
- Supports PDF, Word, HTML, and XML outputs, with more to come.
- Word templates can be used as configuration for quick setup and fast time to production. Reuse already available styles from your .dotx files.
- Preview and generate outputs quickly, from the Fonto Editor authoring experience. Previews look exactly like final publications, without having to go through the entire process.
- Familiar configuration model, similar to Fonto Editor. Reuse system configuration like automated numbering and family configuration.
- Includes support to generate documents with Fonto Review comments
- Advanced layouting like multi-columns, different page formats and orientations, table positioning and strong pagination logic.
- Micro-service cloud ready; Fonto Output comes as a Docker container with a full HTTP API. Configuration surface supports multi-tenant SaaS setups.
Note: The configuration API is still in beta and may change until Q4 2025. Explore the documentation.
Fonto Editor
Fonto Editor performance has been optimized in this 8.13 release for smooth authoring. Besides that, also improvements have been made to the styling of table cells. We also resolved regressions and usability issues in response validators for CMS contracts.
Fonto Document History
Historically, Fonto Review and Fonto Document History have existed as separate products with only limited integration, leaving room for improvement in how users navigate and review content. To enhance this, we’re working on the ability to leave comments directly on changes in Fonto Document History. This will help reviewers focus on what’s been updated without needing to manually search through the content. This is expected to come in our upcoming release. In this release, we’ve added dynamic adjustment of date presets, depending on the age of the publication. Date presets like “Last 7 days” now adjust dynamically if the publication is newer than the preset range.
Fonto Content Quality
Within Fonto Content Quality, we fixed regressions and completed a security-related upgrade.
Fonto Review
The integration of Fonto Document History and Fonto Review requires also changes in the engine that powers Fonto Review. This is something we’ve been working on during this release. Besides that, we also delivered the following:
- Annotations now recover position even when changes are unsaved – useful when autosave is disabled.
- Fixed multiple regressions and rolled out security updates.
Fonto One
Our integrated solution for pharma, Fonto One, has been optimised for localization and translation.
- Trados Enterprise integration: Request, track, and view translations without leaving the Editor.
- External metadata sources: Configure metadata from external systems – no need to define each item manually.
(Note: Dependencies and derived fields are not yet supported.)
What’s next?
We’re continuing to expand the capabilities of Fonto Output by integrating Document History in the product to generate Word files with track changes. Furthermore (and we owe this still from the 8.12 highlights), we will ship the custom annotation navigators for Fonto Review to power SMART Standards, XBRL data, regulatory management and more. We will deepen integrations in Fonto One, and deliver even more flexibility for editors and publishers.
The team is also working hard on the suggestion mode feature for Fonto Review. This is intended to be released at the end of the year.
